never offered before - don’t miss it!

Join author Troy Taylor for another night of our “An Evening with…” series of events! This eerie evening will include a catered dinner, served in our private ballroom at the former hotel. After dinner, Troy Taylor will be presenting an “Evening of Murder Out Yonder,” a nightmarish journey into America’s heartland in search of gruesome, terrifying, and heartbreaking accounts of murder, mayhem, and ghosts!

Far away from the bright lights of the big cities, the peaceful countryside of the “good ‘ol days” was anything but quiet. Those days were far from good, and depravity, violence, and murder were far too common. The isolation and loneliness of rural life often drove people to commit acts of violence that can hardly be imagined outside of our worst nightmares – and those acts often left lingering ghosts behind.

From seemingly normal farmers who snapped and murdered their entire families to murderous hired hands, dangerous drifters, black widows, and worse – this is a night that will have you making sure the door is locked after dark!

MORE ABOUT “MURDER OUT YONDER”

What drives a man or woman to murder? Jealousy, rage, insanity, greed … all these things and more, but when murder experts talk about American crime, they usually pay the most attention to the crime rates of the cities, places like Chicago and New York. But did you know the murder rate in Southern Illinois in the 1920s was much higher than the number of killings in Chicago during that same period? The so-called “Beer Wars,” waged by gangsters like Al Capone couldn’t compete with the farmers and rural folks at the other end of the state.

When we think about the farms of the American heartland in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, we often imagine an idyllic life of grassy fields, cows and horses, and a simple way of life that has been lost to us over the years. But rural life was never quite that simple or carefree. The farms and fields of America’s countryside have been drenched with blood.

The isolation of rural communities often led to murder and suicide. Transient farmhands committed grievous crimes and then vanished to the next farm or next small town down the road. Every farm was well-stocked with murder weapons – including farm tools and, of course, the family ax. Every farm had one to cut wood, remove trees, and kill an animal for supper. It became the go-to weapon for most rural murders, leaving heinous crime scenes in its wake.

On this dark night of murder, mayhem, sinners, and spirits, you’ll hear dark tales like:

- The Murder Farm of Indiana’s “Black Widow.”

- The “Moonlight Murder” of Iowa and the lingering spirit of an unsolved crime

- The sinister “Bluebeard of Quiet Dell” who lured unsuspecting women to his farm and caused them to vanish without a trace

- A nightmare in Kansas and the ghost stories that surrounded the “In Cold Blood” Murders

- The terrifying murder farm of depraved killer Ed Gein

- And more! You don’t want to miss this strange and eerie night of terror in America’s heartland!
