Join Master Magician Carlos David at the American Oddities Museum as he presents a chilling parlor show based on those of the traveling mediums, mystics, and mind-readers of yesterday. It’s a night of the kind of mystery and trickery that fascinated one of the most famous ghost enthusiasts in history, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Spiritualism was born in the mid-nineteenth century and was founded on the belief that life existed after death, that spirits could continue to exist outside of the body, and that these spirits could – and did – communicate with the living. Spiritualists believed that the dead passed along messages from the other side during seances, when strange occurrences happened, serving as proof of their presence.

One of the world’s most famous Spiritualists was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the popular fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur was a devout believer in the spirit world and later in life, devoted all his writing – and a lot of his money – to the promotion of Spiritualism. Unfortunately, Sir Arthur’s belief made him susceptible to a number of phony mediums and frauds, who took advantage of his deep faith to bilk him out of money and publicity. A close friend of St Arthur was the magician Harry Houdini, who tried to convince him that most of what he saw during seances was fake, but Sir Arthur found himself unable to believe that anyone would try and take advantage of him. He expected other people to be as honorable as he was – but it rarely worked out that way.

THE GHOSTS OF SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE is a night of magic and mystery, inspired by the kinds of parlor shows that were practiced by fraudulent mediums when they took advantage of people like Sir Arthur. In this interactive show, Carlos David explores the mysterious and bizarre side of close-up illusion and mediumistic feats from mind reading to spirit communication – the very things that haunted Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle.
